I was honored to be invited to attend Commissioning 101 last Saturday. Graduation time at the United States Naval Academy is not like your typical college graduation. It’s a week long event that is chocked full of activities for the Mids, as well as for their families. There are award ceremonies, dances, receptions, concerts, project presentations – the list goes on and on – and many of the events are mandatory for the Mids themselves, and recommended for parents and family members. Of course, it all culminates with Graduation Day at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium where the Mids receive their diplomas and take their oath of office. They are also Commissioned as an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps. All the details can be daunting and can make for a very stressful time for families if they are not prepared. That’s why the USNA Parents Club of Maryland presents Commissioning 101, which is a training day for the parents of graduating Midshipmen.
Several vendors attended this year’s event, and included area hotels, caterers, and other vendors who provide services to Midshipmen and their families. I met many of the parents and had some great conversations. Several of the parents entered our drawing for a free portrait session which will be done later this Spring on the Yard (the grounds at the Academy).
Any session scheduled before March 1st will receive a $100 credit toward the purchase of your finished portraits!
Schedule now so that the portraits will be ready to view and choose while you’re in Annapolis during Commissioning Week (or before, if you’re local)!
