a front runner for the Republican nomination in the 2000 Presidential
race, made his first formal announcement confirming himself as
a candidate on September 27, 1999 from the grounds of the US Naval
Academy. Using the popular television program, Good Morning
America as his pulpit, McCain and his wife, Cindy, announced
his candidacy shortly after 7:00 a.m. Immediately after a quick
breakfast, they met Annapolis photographer, David Anderson, for
a prearranged family portrait session.
Wanting to use the grounds of the academy as the backdrop, Anderson had set up outdoors, but needed to quickly move to a porch of the Academy Superintendent's residence when rain began to pour. Nonetheless, he was able to take several exposures of the Senator, his wife, and four children, before they had to catch a plane to New Hampshire for a big rally.
The family portraits were primarily used for the McCain's Christmas cards ... 25,000 of them ... as well as for personal family gifts. Rights to use the photograph were also requested by several news organizations, and it was published and broadcast worldwide, and was used in campaign materials produced by the McCain 2000 committee.
Anderson has previously photographed
several other presidential candidates (see related story below),
and has also photographed President George Bush, First
Lady Barbara Bush, and former Vice President Dan Quayle

maintains that he is non-partisan, and is in fact registered as
an Independent.

April 14, 1997
Local Photographer chosen for Random House book
Publishing giant, Random House,
recently selected a photograph by Annapolis photographer David
Anderson to illustrate a new book called, Riding the Bull.
The book, authored by Paul Stiles, is loosely based on his experiences
as a stockbroker on Wall Street.
Anderson's photographs will be used not only to illustrate the
book jacket itself, but will also be used for promotion of the
book nationwide.
David
Anderson Photography announced today that one of its photographs
was chosen for a new book entitled, The Perfect Baby.
After shopping around at several national stock photo agencies,
publishing company Rowman and Littlefield just couldn't find a
photograph that they thought best illustrated the book's title.
Finally, someone at the company remembered Anderson's Christmas
card from the previous year that featured his daughter coming
out of a gift box. They asked to see a copy of it, and lo and
behold, they decided that it was the photo to illustrate
the cover.
The book, written by Glenn McGee, focuses on the complex
territory of genetic medicine and offers new insights for individual
decisions and public policy. It has received outstanding reviews
from the medical community and bioethicists, and is being distributed
worldwide by National Book Network.
